Our History

More Than Four Decades of Helping Seniors Live Their Most Authentic Lives—And Counting

Since 1978, our dedicated caregivers have been helping seniors live with purpose and dignity. What started as a vision for exceptional care has grown into one of Columbus, Ohio’s most trusted nonprofit senior living communities. These proud milestones honor our past and inspire us to build an even brighter future—just for you.

1978–1988

The first gardeners and landscape designers planted trees, shrubs, and flowers.

The Residents’ Association was formed so seniors could work side-by-side with the administration to meet the special needs and concerns of the community.

1998–2008

Resident leaders became very involved in community decisions, including the design and development of Friendship Woods.

2021–Present

We changed our name from Friendship Village Columbus to Westerwood to better appeal to seniors today.

1988–1998

Residents published the first issue of The Village Highlights—a newsletter that has gradually grown to include original stories and memories.

The groundbreaking for Ridgewood Assisted Living took place; it is now called Westerwood Assisted Living.

2008–2020

Multimillion-dollar renovations were made to our community, including updates to our first-floor assisted living wing, exterior painting, and an interior refresh.

The elegant monthly first-Sunday brunch began.

The first four-legged residents (seniors’ beloved pets) were welcomed on campus.
