Memory Care

Westerwood is known as one of the premier memory care centers in Columbus, Ohio, for reasons that go beyond our recognized expertise in meeting the specific needs of those with Alzheimer’s or dementia. The real reason we’ve earned the trust of families and healthcare professionals is that our focus on wellness and dedication to a journey of personal purpose doesn’t end when the disease begins—it gets even stronger.

Knowing that Westerwood memory care has one of Ohio’s highest caregiver-to-patient ratios brings confidence. Knowing that those caregivers have long tenures here and are managed by a visionary leadership team that has been together for more than two decades? That’s genuine peace of mind.

With an intimate, homelike setting and decidedly un-institutional feel, our memory care household lives up to its name. It’s easy to navigate and features comfortable gathering areas that echo with sounds of structured daily activities and conversations between residents, their families and staff members. Just outside, our enclosed courtyard’s beautiful landscaping and seating provide the perfect setting for peaceful communion with nature. And because we’re just down the hall from the medical resources of our Long-Term Care neighborhood, the right care is available at a moment’s notice.

In a flash, the world of a person with Alzheimer’s or dementia can go from sunny to stormy without warning. That’s why our experienced caregivers work with you to create a detailed profile of your loved one that includes, among other things:

  • Significant people and relationships
  • Academic and professional history
  • Hobbies
  • Favorite (and least favorite) foods, sports teams and more
  • Traumatic life events and potential triggers

Knowing these important things about your loved one helps us guide their daily journey to avoid negative triggers, engage with them in happy memories and help compassionately end traumatic flashbacks.

Find out in 4 minutes by taking our interactive care needs assessment whether now is the right time to consider memory care—and how to know when it’s time later.

With more than 120 live, on-campus events in a typical year, your loved one will enjoy experiences that will nurture their spirit, engage their senses and express their individuality. They’ll also enjoy daily engagement activities including:

  • Music, dance and art therapy
  • Crafting
  • Gardening
  • Pet therapy

One of our most popular enrichment programs is Opening Minds Through Art (OMA), an evidence-based, intergenerational art program designed by the Scripps Gerontology Center for memory care residents. In OMA, residents with dementia collaborate and create art with specially trained students from nearby Otterbein College.

The program, which has received numerous best practice awards, has been listed as a Quality Improvement Project by the Ohio Department of Aging since 2015 and funded by the Ohio Department of Medicaid since 2016.
