Besides 14 private and semi-private suites for residents, our memory care neighborhood offers a beautiful, open environment that promotes natural interactions between residents and guests. Light-filled rooms with large windows help regulate circadian rhythms to support sleep and mood. Our enclosed courtyard allows residents to enjoy sun-filled days out in nature safely.

During a typical year, Westerwood offers more than 120 live, on-campus events. Moreover, we offer daily engagement for our memory care residents, including music, dance, art therapy, crafting, gardening and pet-therapy visits

Opening Minds Through Art (OMA)

Opening Minds Through Art (OMA) is a Scripps Gerontology Center intergeneration art making program for memory care residents.

The program provides people living with dementia an opportunity to express their creativity. In OMA, people with dementia are paired on a weekly basis with college students from Otterbein University who are trained to support the elders creative expression. The pairs meet in a small group setting to create art.

OMA’s mission is to “Build bridges across age and cognitive barriers through art.” It is evidence-based, has received a number of best practice awards, and has been listed as a Quality Improvement Project by the Ohio Department of Aging since 2015 and funded by the Ohio Department of Medicaid since 2016.
